The crown jewel of Romantic ballet

Giselle is the crown jewel of French Romantic ballet. Its timeless story and the ethereal beauty of the spirits in Act II continue to enchant audiences across the world.

Artistic Director of the Ballet, choreographer Javier Torres brings the story of the ballet from the Middle Ages to 1950s Italy. The result is a production that honours the traditions of the genre, enriching Act I with alluring new visuals and a stronger narrative, before returning to the familiar, cherished aesthetics of Act II.

“Societally, the 1950s was an era when gender roles were still highly conservative, despite women gaining more freedom with the emergence of modern household appliances, for example. Women were still expected to be respectable girls, good wives, or devoted mothers – and always subordinate to men. This hypocritical ideology, combined with the fashion of the time, provided the perfect framework for keeping the ballet’s original elements while introducing new dramaturgical contrasts to the story.”

Southern Italy, 1950s…

synopsis

At daybreak, in a town square in Southern Italy, Alberto, the son of a wealthy magnate, disguises himself as a villager in order to court Giselle, a young waitress working at her mother’s café. Their romantic moment is interrupted by Hilario, the café’s cook, who is also in love with Giselle. Intimidated by Alberto, Hilario retreats. Giselle and Alberto then join the preparations for the cherry festival. While Alberto is alone, Hilario spies on him and discovers a hidden gun.

At midday, a group of wealthy visitors, led by Batilde, Alberto’s fiancée and the daughter of Il Duca, another influential magnate, arrives in the square. Alberto slips away before being seen. Il Duca joins Batilde on the café terrace, where they order drinks. Giselle meets Batilde, who soon begins to feel unwell and is taken inside the café. The wealthy group disperses.

At sunset, the cherry festival begins. Giselle and Alberto dance joyfully in the crowd until Hilario challenges Alberto for Giselle’s affection. Humiliated by defeat, Hilario reveals Alberto’s gun and fires it into the air. Batilde and Il Duca emerge from the café. Realising Alberto’s betrayal, Giselle loses her mind. As she regains her composure, she tries to run towards Alberto. Overcome with jealousy, Hilario shoots Giselle. She collapses and dies in Alberto’s arms.

At midnight, in a ghostly setting haunted by the Wilis, the vengeful spirits of women killed before they could experience true love, Giselle’s mother, Stella, and her secret lover, Il Duca (who is also Giselle’s father), mourn her tragic death. Frightened by eerie sounds, they flee the scene.

Hilario, now a fugitive, sneaks in to grieve for Giselle but is also frightened off by the same eerie noises. Myrtha, the leader of the Wilis, rises with her ethereal companions to summon Giselle into their ghostly company.

Alberto arrives, tormented by grief, and encounters Giselle’s spirit. They share a heartfelt dance, but Giselle, fearing for his safety, urges him to leave before the Wilis appear. Hilario returns, pursued by the Wilis, but narrowly escapes their wrath. When Alberto is hunted by the spirits, Giselle’s love shields him. They dance together through the night, desperately hoping for dawn to break and save him.

As daylight arrives, Alberto is spared. He walks toward the light, leaving Giselle’s fading silhouette to disappear into the darkness.
